Last week I took all the dogs up to the bay area for training with Andrew Ramsey. He trains in the same style and system that I use and I really enjoy working with him. The dogs all did well and we had so much fun. I am so excited about the sport of NoseWork. In this sport you take the same techniques used to train bomb and drug detection dogs and use it to teach pets to find legal odors. The most common are Birch, Anise and Clove but you can teach your dog to find any odor this way. It is cheap and easy to do at home and you can go on and compete if you want. Bellow is a video of Kona on just her 4th day of training. She is already on odor only in a small tin out of the furniture. Look for NoseWork class on the schedule in the future!

In April I move to the new training center at 774 Caudill St. It was a bumpy ride with the construction and I do a little more each week. I am happy to be here and so are my dogs! As much as I like the indoor center the rent was just to high! To keep class prices low I gave up indoors for a larger outdoor area. I will be added more picture soon. These are from the start of construction.

I loved this book! Jetta wants to do well as a service dog, but struggles with her canine instincts. She writes her memoir as a service dog with great humor and information without sounding like a “teaching book.” I love her “voice.” Dog lovers and children will love this book! I highly recommend it. Emi Lou

A dog can bring so much to life. “Jetta’s Journey: My Life as a Service Dog” is a memoir told from the perspective of the dog of author Denise Solter’s, reflecting on what her dog Jetta has done for her in turning her life around. Touching and poignant, “Jetta’s Journey” is a story that will bring warmth to any dog lover.

Picked this book at my husband’s physical therapy session. I have ordered 15 books as the perfect Christmas gifts…at least one I would love to receive. Can’t wait to give them! Thank you, Denise!!!

Have fun, while building confidence, and burning lots of mental and physical energy for your dog. NoseWork does not take a lot of space, fancy equipment, or physical ability from the owner or dog. Currently one organization is holding trials. Their target odors are Birch, Anise, and Clove. When competing the dogs must pass 4 elements vehicles, containers, interior, and exterior. There are 3 levels of difficultly that you can title in. All breeds, mixes, ages, sizes are welcome! Bellow are some videos from Andrew Ramsey. He taught me everything I know about NoseWork and is a great teacher. Visit Andrew’s website here.

We will send a lot of time in this class getting the dogs excited and confident in the training area and with our training equipment. They will also be learning the “game “of NoseWork. We start by having the dogs hunt for their favorite reward. We make it very easy at first to build confidence and keep the dogs working happily. We increase the difficultly and at some point pair our target odor (Birch) with the reward the dog is hunting for. Like all class here the dogs set the pace and we move forward in training as each dog is ready. Dog will stay in the car or be crated when it is not their turn. Since the dogs are working one at a time they have time to absorb what we did while waiting for their next turn. A “turn” can mean 4-15 reps depending on the dog and how difficult the work is. This is an ideal class for all dogs including fearful or dog reactive dogs. Class runs for 1.5 hours each week.

NoseWork Continued ( 6 weeks $135 )

Now that the dogs are confident in the training environment, excited to work, and have learn the Focused Final Response we can move forward with training. Again the class moves forward for each dog individually. We will introduce the other two odors and move to different areas like containers and vehicles. At some point owners will be able to reward their own dog and can begin to practice at home. This class is to be taken as many time as a dog handler team needs in order to obtain their ORT. Class runs for 1.5 hours each week.

At some point the dog handler team will be ready to move out of the SLO Training Center and work in new locations. This class is modeled like the K9 Out and About. We will meet at a different location each week but instead of doing Obedience we will be doing NoseWork! Dogs in this class should be working on all 3 odors and handlers should be rewarding. Class runs for 1.5 hours each week.
