FAQs

General Class Questions

  • What training methods do you use?

Obedience is taught through positive renforcement with verbal markers. In both group classes and one on one training each dog and handler will be given specific guidance that is appropriate  for them.

  • Do you offer the ” life time” plan where I can take the same class over for free?

I do not offer this “plan” you should not have to take the same class more than once. You should continue your training forward to more challenging behaviors and situations.  Other trainers offer this because their methods are not effective and it takes a while for the dog to learn what we want. Don’t get stuck in a rut with another trainer. Use a system that work the first time! All clients are welcome to attend group walks and other events for free. These are great training environments to practice what you have learned!

  • Can my friends/family attend class?

Anyone who lives with the dog is encouraged to particulate in class and with the dogs training. Children over the age of 8 may attend as well. I ask that if friends or family attend only some classes they ask questions only about that class. This way the rest of the class will not have to review material they were present for.

  • Can I make a class up if  I miss one?

Classes missed for personal reasons usually can not be made up unless there are two of the same classes going on at the same time. It is best to ask.

  • What happens if  a class is canceled?

It is rare that classes are canceled . I have to be really really sick or it is raining. Call in and check the message machine 1 hour prior to class for cancelations. A class will be added to the end of the session so make the full 6 weeks in any case.

  • Should I buy a training collar before class?

No. We will be discussing the needs of each dog and person. I will make recommendations  and you can then buy collars from me or a local store.

  • What type of treats should I use?

Something soft and tasty. I use red barn . It can be bought on line or at Farm Supply and Specialty Pet Supply. Treats should be cut in pea sized pieces. Chicken or other meats work well. Just nothing shredded.

  • How long will training take?

This will be different for each dog/handler team. The more you practice and the more places you practice the faster your dog will learn.

  • Can I take two classes at once?

Some classes may be taken together. Check the class prerequisites for each class or contacts me with any questions.

  • What is a mat?

A easy to carry dog bed that you can take any where. It should be big enough for your dog to fit it whole body on. This example is expensive but great for dogs that chew their beds:

General Dog Questions

  • What type of flea control is best?

I only use Comfortis! It is the best I could talk about it all day. Flea collars are the worst and are not allowed to be warn in class.

  • What dog food is best?

If you do your research you will find that grain free dog food is the way to go. When was the last time you saw a wolf eat a ear of corn or some food that looks like fruit loops? I feed my dogs  Orijen. For information on feeding raw foods go here. Never feed your dog cooked bones.

  • What toys do your recommend when my dog is alone?

No toy is 100% indestructible Periodically inspect all toys for damage. Do not allow your dog to continue to play with a damaged or broken toy. You must weight the risk of leaving your dog alone with a toy over the benefit and make the choice that is best for you.

Buster Cube

Bob a Lot ( Strong jawed dog may chew this one. So use caution)

Kong Wobbler

Classic Kong-Black ( Use your best judgement when choosing what to fill these with. Peanut butter everyday is not good for your dog. The fillers you can buy are not great either. )

Jolly Tug

Romp and Rool

Mega Ring

Mega Tug

Tug a Jug

Chase N Pull

Stuffer Toy ( make sure you do not treat if you dog ignores the toy)

  • If I feel I need a bark collar what should I do?

Training is alway my first option. If your neighbors are complaining and you need a quick fix this is the only bark collar I recommend. You will still want to get your dog training. Electric bark collars should not be used when dogs are together.

Bark Limiter

SparySense ( make sure you can return this where ever you buyt it. It will not work for every dog. Can be used with dogs together)

  • Can I ride my bike with my dogs?

Yes! Just use one of these for safety.

WalkyDog & Tow Leash

  • Where can I get the backpack you recommended?

You can chose any of these.

  • My dog is chewing things right in front of me! What do I do?

Crate the dog when you are away. Look into anti chew training.
