I alway knew that I would work with dogs. I worked in many areas of the dog world before focussing just on training including veterinary clinics, boarding kennels, dog breeders, and animal shelters. Each place had it’s “problem dogs” and I was often the one called upon to handle these dogs. It was the dogs that I worked with at the shelter that really made me focus on Behavior. Many of them reminded me of my childhood dogs (who were not raised or taken care of like they should have been.) Some of the dogs came from long lines of dogs that were aggressive or fearful. While other did not not get what they needed as a dog. Some owner were mislead my breeders, others just had no idea what a dog needed.
I began interned with some of the top trainers and behaviorist in the country ( I still do when I can, you never stop learning! ) and I quickly realized that good dog training could not be taught in 6 weeks at a park. There is so much to know and lean, after all we are dealing with a different species. My own dogs were Guinea Pigs along the way ( they loved all the attention) trying out different methods that I had learned.
Today dog behavior and training is my life! I love every second of it! I train my own dogs in Agility, Herding, Rally-O, and am beginning NoseWorks. I currently have 4 rescue dogs: Cuervo a 10 year old pit, Lilly a 6 year old pug, Dash a 3 year old Cattle Dog/McNab, and Kona a 1 year old Puggle. They share the house with two cats, fish and many random homeless animals that I am fostering and looking for homes for. My house maybe a zoo at times but everyone get along and they all know how to share.
It is my hope that everyone person and dog I work with will have a better relationship than when they started and be looking forward to their next training session!
