Anyone can be a “Dog Breeder.” They are not required to have any education. They can breed unhealthy aggressive dogs and they are not breaking the law. Their are thousand of people in the business to take peoples money. They will lie and you will be left heart broken. This is why doing your research is so important! Use the guidelines bellow in your search for a reputable breeder.
- Health: This is the first place I start. Because of human intervention ( instead of natural selection ) dogs have developed several medical conditions. These range from horrible allergies ( english bulldogs ) to hip dysplasia ( german shepherd ) to cancer at 6 years old ( boxers). So it is important to make sure that non of these run in the line of dogs you are looking at buying. These are genetic issues that are passes on to puppies. Don’t let a breeder tell you other wise. Visit this site : http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/breeds.html . Click on the breed you are looking at. It will give you a list of health screenings the breeder should be doing BEFORE breeding the dogs. For example the pug should have it Hips, Patellar, Eye, and Encephalitis checked. The other place you want to check is the health section of the parent club. Find your parent club here http://www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm. This will explain the health concerns and what they mean. Do not let a breeder fool you with Champion titles! They don’t mean anything when it come to health. As I type this a Lab breeder is finding a stud for her female. The dog has her AKC Grand Champion title. She also has elbow dysplasia. She will have no problem finding a male. The breeder should have certificates. Don’t just take their word.
